My Koehler stationary natural gas generator manual mentions using synthetic oil. The installation guy refuses to use it when he does the yearly servicing-he brings along the regular stuff.
    Who’s right?

    • Thank you for your question.

Synthetic oil has a broader temperature range allowing for easy starting of the engine specifically when temperatures are very low. It is not required to use synthetic oil but its use can help in the life of the unit over time.

I personally would use synthetic oil in a small twin cylinder engine because the benefits outweigh the negatives. In my mind cost is minimal because these units typically use less than 2 quarts of oil.

So, it’s not a matter of whose right or wrong, it’s a personal preference because both oil types will work.
